On Wednesday, a 36-year-old woman named Amanda was fatally shot by police in the Legacy area of Calgary. Amanda had a long history of mental health and addiction struggles, and had been seeking care. She was a paraplegic, had one leg amputated, and was a single mother. Police had been called for welfare checks multiple times, and her psychiatrist, social worker, and therapist had alerted police about her mental state. Amanda had a paintball gun for self-defense, and police reported she came outside with a weapon, though its nature was not disclosed. On 10.08.2026, a man shot a Calgary police officer in Edworthy Park, then fled and shot himself. The incident began when officers attempted a traffic stop on his truck in the parking lot. The man fled into a nearby dog park, firing several rounds at the officers, injuring one. Police returned fire and deployed a HAWCS helicopter to track him. The man shot at the helicopter while fleeing, then carjacked a work truck at gunpoint and drove onto railroad tracks. When the truck got stuck, he ran into the Bow River and shot himself. Police found him dead minutes later. A handgun was recovered from the river the next day. Zwei Frauen hatten Anzeige erstattet, woraufhin die Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) am 11.03.2024 Ermittlungen aufnahm. Die Staatsanwaltschaft von Alberta sah die Beweise als ausreichend für eine Anklage an. Chomik wurde aus dem Dienst suspendiert und ohne Bezüge freigestellt. A physical altercation occurred inside the store between two men and a woman, leaving one man with non-life-threatening injuries. On Aug. 24, 2026 at approximately 6 a.m., police were called to the 4000 block of Edmonton Tr. N.E. in Calgary, a block from the first incident, following reports of suspicious activity. Witnesses said the site had been repeatedly accessed by suspects. Upon arrival, officers found one suspect sleeping inside a vehicle. Officers then opened the manhole cover and located a second suspect inside the manhole. Police seized multiple tools and supplies, as well as approximately 25 feet of cut telecommunications cable. At the scene, police found 23.4 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 11.7 grams of suspected fentanyl, and electronic and hand tools. Aurora Felicity Burr, 29, of Calgary, a suspect in the first incident, is charged with mischief over $5,000, possession of break-in instruments, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, possession of fentanyl and possession of methamphetamine. Officers found a red SUV with a tow strap hooked to an object inside a manhole. A witness reported that the vehicle was driven forward in an attempt to pull items from the manhole. Officers located three suspects, one man and two women, near the manhole and took all three into custody. Calvin Joseph Hawryluk, 46, of Calgary, is charged with mischief causing damage over $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance. Linda Lee Scott, 57, of Calgary, is charged with mischief causing damage over $5,000 and breach of probation order. On 08.06.2026, Dianne Simmons, 76, died in hospital after lying on the floor of a rural home for seven to ten days following a fall. Her daughter June Briggs and common-law husband Richard McElroy failed to call 911 until she became unconscious. She died of multi-organ failure due to sepsis from infected wounds. Justice Kelsey Becker Brookes sentenced both to four years in prison, rejecting the defence's argument of limited intellectual capacity and proposal of house arrest.
