• 111 arrests after attempted migrant mass crossing to Ceuta
Of those arrested, 109 came from sub-Saharan Africa and two were Moroccan nationals. Police used tear gas to disperse people gathered on hills approximately two miles from the border. The attempted crossing took place two weeks after more than 72,000 people descended on Ceuta, an incident in which at least 96 people died, many by drowning. Moroccan authorities had previously announced they were monitoring social media posts urging a crossing on 15 August and would prosecute organisers and participants. In Ceuta, soldiers and more than 500 extra police officers were sent from mainland Spain, bringing the total presence to more than 1,600 officers, and a barrier was installed in the sea to prevent another mass crossing.

  • Moroccan police block second migrant rush into Ceuta
Hundreds of migrants had gathered in the border town of Castillejos after calls on social media encouraged a new crossing. Riot police, supported by armoured vehicles and a helicopter, were deployed. The migrants were charged and cornered about three kilometres from the Spanish exclave; no crossings into Ceuta were successful. Approximately 300 people, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, were arrested for attempting to cross the border illegally. An additional 61 people were arrested for inciting and promoting the attempt on social media. On the Spanish side, army personnel and armoured vehicles were positioned at the border, and Ceuta was placed on high alert with all leave cancelled for Spanish troops.
