On October 9, 2025, former Toronto Police officer Derek McCormick, 56, stole a black cellphone turned in by a member of the public at the front desk of 52 Division. He gave the phone to Const. Timothy Barnhardt, who is alleged to be at the centre of the Project South corruption scandal. McCormick pleaded guilty to breach of trust and theft under $5,000 and received a 10-month conditional sentence including five months of house arrest. He also disposed of about 60 credit cards, IDs, and bus passes down a sewer, where investigators later found 120 items including three Colombian passports stolen in 2024.
