Seven members of the Balkans-based Krasniqi people-smuggling gang have been arrested or surrendered to police after UK financial and travel sanctions. The group ran a counterfeiting operation in Kosovo producing forged identity documents, passports and driving licences that enabled illegal migrants to claim nationality from more than 50 countries and travel across Europe, facilitating the illegal entry of thousands of migrants. The arrested individuals are Flamur Krasniqi, Valon Krasniqi, Arif Krasniqi, Nexhmije Selmani, Shkembim Ermellahu, Sami Duriqi and Granit Avdyli, who are accused of roles including producing forged documents, sourcing clients, providing premises and equipment, and advertising the group's services. The UK sanctions, designed to freeze assets and impose travel bans, were assessed by Kosovan authorities as very likely having a significant impact on several suspects' decisions to hand themselves in.
