A Volkswagen Passat, which had been pursued by police, was driven the wrong way along the A66 dual carriageway and collided with a marked armed response vehicle, killing two police officers, PCs Matthew Blades (37) and Tom Clough (38), and five young men in the Passat: Cole Robert Worthy (17), Theo Rae (17), Makai Saddington (18), Michael Robert Cahill (23) and Jacob Matusiak (23). The Passat had been involved in a pursuit lasting just under seven minutes, which was aborted before the collision. A Volvo XC60, believed to be associated with the Passat, was also reported ramming properties and has been recovered. Both vehicles were using cloned number plates. Twelve suspects, nine men and three women aged 19 to 61, have been arrested on suspicion of offences including possession of a firearm and participating in the activities of a crime group. One suspect, Cameron George (26), has been charged with possession with intent to supply class A and class B drugs and possession of criminal property. The investigation has significant links to serious and organised criminal activity. On 22.08.2026, early in the morning, officers received reports of two vehicles being driven dangerously in the Middlesbrough area.
