On 22.08.2026 at approximately 03:39, a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way down the A66 near Middlesbrough collided with a police vehicle going in the right direction. Two serving police officers in the marked vehicle and five members of the public in the Passat were pronounced dead at the scene. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened an investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash after a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police. The A66 is closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane in Eston. Police are working to formally identify all occupants of the Volkswagen Passat and have informed the families of those identified.
