Hundreds of migrants had gathered in the border town of Castillejos after calls on social media encouraged a new crossing. Riot police, supported by armoured vehicles and a helicopter, were deployed. The migrants were charged and cornered about three kilometres from the Spanish exclave; no crossings into Ceuta were successful. Approximately 300 people, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, were arrested for attempting to cross the border illegally. An additional 61 people were arrested for inciting and promoting the attempt on social media.
