The other vehicle, carrying a child and three women from the same family, was on its way to Dublin Airport for an abroad wedding; they are fighting for their lives in hospital. Gardaí had earlier attempted to stop the BMW but were instructed not to pursue it. The crash has prompted renewed focus on enforcement of dangerous driving, regulation of social media content, and provision of State care to children. An Garda Síochána maintained a visible presence at Joe Carthy's funeral in Athy on 21.08.2026, amid concern for possible disorder.
