The 32-year-old Russian national Margarita Reut has been arrested in Sevastopol in Crimea on suspicion of carrying out a bombing on behalf of Ukrainian special services. The attack killed Robert Mansurovich Shageev, a former Ukrainian submarine commander who defected to Russia during the 2014 annexation of Crimea and who had been wanted by Kyiv for high treason since July 2022. Ms Reut allegedly planted an explosive device in a bin next to a bench on Stoletovsky Avenue while Mr Shageev was walking down the avenue with a friend; he died from his injuries at the scene. The blast was reportedly so loud that residents initially mistook it for a drone strike. Investigators say she acted on orders of Ukrainian special services and showed no remorse, reportedly stating that she did not regret killing an officer of the Russian army. She is said to have been paid in cryptocurrency and planned to flee abroad from Sochi. Ms Reut, born in Yaroslavl and living in Sochi, had a previous police run-in in July 2025 for shouting remarks about Russian casualties and was fined under legislation against 'discrediting' the Russian military. The investigation is ongoing.
