Steven Schwally, 66, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for driving drunk and crashing his SUV through the front of the Hawaii Nail Salon in Deer Park, Long Island, in 2024, killing four people. He was arrested and convicted on 30 counts, including murder, assault, and vehicular homicide. The SUV was traveling at nearly 80 miles per hour at the time of the crash. Those killed were NYPD Officer Emilia Rennhack, salon owner Jincai Chen, and employees Yan Xu and Meizi Zhang. Chen's wife, Jun Chen, was injured in the crash and lost her spleen. During victim impact statements, Schwally apologized to the families but was also seen making an obscene gesture at a photographer. His attorney, Christopher Cassar, said he did not see the gesture and had no knowledge of its intent. Judge Richard Ambro imposed the sentence, saying Schwally was and still is 'depravedly indifferent.'.
