Robert Bush, 48, from Otley, West Yorkshire, was jailed for 20 years for leaving dozens of bodies – including a miscarried baby – to rot in his mortuary and giving bereaved families the wrong ashes. Bush, owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Services in Hull, pleaded guilty to 67 offences spanning 12 years, including 30 counts of preventing a lawful and decent burial. He was arrested on 10 March 2024 at Heathrow Airport on return from a £3,000 holiday in Arizona funded by his funeral fraud. Officers found more than 35 bodies and more than 100 sets of ashes at the premises on Hessle Road in March 2024, including the remains of baby Sunny Beverley-Conlin, miscarried at 18 weeks in May 2022, whose family believed he had been cremated. Some families received ashes of other people, and one set was turned into jewellery. Bush also stole money intended for 12 charities and sold false funeral plans to 226 people totalling £562,117, spending over £42,000 on holidays, £21,000 on motorcycle racing and £17,400 on home improvements. At Hull Crown Court, over five days of sentencing, more than 80 victims described their horror; Judge Hilliard said Bush had been 'so preoccupied with his own enrichment' that he behaved in a shocking and disgraceful way.
