Robert Gilman (32) gravely ill in Russian custody
Robert Gilman, a 32-year-old former U.S. Marine and teacher, has been detained in Russia since 2022 on disputed charges and is currently gravely ill. According to his family and advocates, he has been in a 'dissociative stupor' for 47 days, a condition attributed to abuse suffered in prison. His mother's attempt to visit him in Russia was denied by hospital officials. Gilman was initially sentenced to three-and-a-half years in 2022 for beating a police officer following a disturbance on a train. He was subsequently convicted of attacking a prison inspector, beating an investigator, and assaulting a guard, and his sentence was extended in 2025 to 10 years after he was found guilty of assaulting prison guards. The business daily Kommersant reported that Gilman pleaded guilty to the charges and apologized to the guards, explaining that he wished to remain in his current prison and avoid transfer to another facility. Senator Edward Markey and the State Department have urged his release on humanitarian grounds; he is one of at least eight Americans currently detained in Russia.
