On 22.08.2026, a head-on collision occurred on the A66 in Middlesbrough when a Volkswagen Passat, travelling in the wrong direction, collided with a police car. The crash resulted in the deaths of five men: Michael Cahill (23), Cole Worthy (17), Theo Rae (17), Makai Saddington (18), and Jakub Matusiak (23), as well as two police officers, PC Matthew Blades (37) and PC Tom Clough (38). Cleveland Police have linked the incident to organised criminal activity and have arrested 17 people as part of an investigation into alleged organised crime. The investigation is ongoing.
