On 18 December last year, police spotted a Kia Sportage at the Pentagon roundabout in Derby, suspected of being driven by a disqualified driver. The driver, 54-year-old Philip Hutchinson, sped off and failed to stop when blue lights were activated. He drove from Spondon towards the M1, contravening keep left signs, driving on the wrong side of the road, and going through a red light. During the pursuit he reached speeds of 90mph in 50mph zones and 70mph in 30mph zones. He rammed the rear of a police car, entered a closed lane where workmen were operating, and went the wrong way around the J25 roundabout of the M1 before attempting to get on the A52 slip road the wrong way. An officer in an unmarked car approached, and Hutchinson drove straight at the vehicle, causing the officer to suffer concussion and whiplash. He was boxed in and arrested. Hutchinson, of no fixed address, admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, using a vehicle without insurance, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage. On 3 August he was jailed for three years and five months at Derby Crown Court. The sentence also incorporated other offences including stalking, shoplifting and breaking bail conditions. He was also banned from driving until he takes an extended retest.
