On 10/12/2023, Rodney Constantine, who had consumed up to 15 alcoholic drinks after an argument with his former girlfriend, drove erratically at between 125 and 165 km/h before crashing into a house on Empire Avenue in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Mark Squires and his brother Andrew were passengers in the vehicle; Andrew told the court that Mark screamed and cried for Constantine to stop the car and let him out. The car struck the house, flipped onto its side and caught fire, and Mark Squires was pronounced dead at the scene. He pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death. Five victim impact statements were read; Constantine was remanded into custody until his next appearance on 17/09/2026, when a new sentencing submission will be heard.
