Review sought over 'lenient' sentence for Big Ben climber
In March 2025, 30-year-old Daniel Day, an unemployed pro-Palestinian activist, climbed the Elizabeth Tower barefoot and sat on the landmark for 17 hours while displaying a Palestinian flag. The protest, which lasted from 7am until midnight, triggered an emergency service response, forced road closures and cost taxpayers an estimated £92,000. Day was convicted of public nuisance and trespassing on a protected site and received a 14-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has written to Attorney General Ellie Reeves asking her to refer the case to the Court of Appeal as an unduly lenient sentence, citing several aggravating features including the tower's status as a World Heritage Site and the significant disruption caused. He also pointed to Just Stop Oil protesters Morgan Trowland and Marcus Decker, who received prison sentences of three years and two years and seven months for scaling the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. Former Attorney General Sir Michael Ellis supported the review application. The letter will be considered in due course.
