Am 06.08.2026 musste sich die Polizei in Chicago gewaltsam Zutritt zu einem Bestattungsinstitut verschaffen, während dort eine Trauerfeier stattfand. Anwohner hatten sich zuvor wiederholt über einen unerträglichen Gestank in der Umgebung beschwert. Der Besitzer hatte die Tür verriegelt, sodass die Einsatzkräfte mit Unterstützung der Feuerwehr das Gebäude öffnen mussten. Bei einer Inspektion zusammen mit Experten der Gerichtsmedizin wurden die verwesenden Leichname von 57 Menschen entdeckt, die unsachgemäß und zum Teil ungekühlt aufbewahrt worden waren. In dem Polizeibericht ist zudem von Nagetier- und Madenbefall die Rede. Dem Bestattungsinstitut wurde die Lizenz entzogen.
